Going Mobile: Keeping up with a Nation on the Move

Written by Antti Kosunen | July 2019

There’s no two ways about it, we’re a country on the go. From workers at remote and field service locations to business and personal travelers, mobility is a way of life for most of us. And, we expect to be able to get all the information we want and need wherever we are.

Technology advances and cultural shifts have been key drivers of mobility, changing the very ways that we work. The cloud, which makes it possible to be connected to apps and databases from anywhere, has enabled companies to break down the physical barriers of traditional offices. And, the advent of mobile devices – that have become smarter over time – now let us have the Internet wherever we travel – along with access to the cloud, email and many other apps and tools. Today, more than 81 percent of Americans have smartphones, according to Pew Research.

The cost of real estate has also contributed to the increase in mobile workers. Many companies find that it is more cost effective to implement hoteling, offering unassigned, shared office space, than to keep all of their employees tied to specific desks. At the same time, cultural changes are creating an additional impetus for mobility. Millennials are leading the way in pushing for greater work/life balance and more flexible work arrangements, and companies are trying to accommodate them. As a result of all of this, it seems like everywhere we go, we see employees, part-time workers, freelancers and entrepreneurs conducting business in coffee shops and other locations of their choice.

On top of that, business travel is strong and growing, with spending in this area predicted to hit $1.7 trillion by 2022 according to Global Business Travel Association (GBTA). In today’s global marketplace, with multinational firms that have offices around the world and companies with customers and partners everywhere – we seem to be constantly on the move.

Despite the seismic changes that have been moving the workplace from the office to the road, workers expect the same type of connection and immediate access to their apps as they always have. They also are demanding the same ease-of-use and user-friendly interface they have come to expect from their consumer apps.

That places a big responsibility for tech providers who realize they must go mobile or die. Providers need to offer robust capabilities, and at the same time easy convenience to support field workers, remote employees and road warriors. The pace of business can’t stop – and if anything, it’s accelerating.

The world of AP is no different. Invoice review or approvals can’t wait for someone to return from travel. We need to be able to accommodate workers who are working remotely – whether it’s from a coffee shop, airport or home. Any delays in processing invoices can lead to inefficiencies, late invoices and potential late payment penalties.

By using mobile capabilities to process invoices, you can gain greater visibility – regardless of whether reviewers, approvers or AP personnel are in the office, in the field or anywhere else. And, as a result, you can improve your purchase-to-pay process, while increasing efficiencies and cost effectiveness.
